New Resource Helps
Strengthen Board Performance
A high-performing board of directors is critical to keeping your nonprofit on the road to success.
Continuous governance improvement is just as important to organizational success as continuous operational improvement. In fact, the two go together.
Successful organizations need high-performing boards. Successful boards assess their own performance so that they can better support their executives and achieve their enterprise's goals. Governance assessment is one of the key tools for strengthening board and overall organizational performance.
The Center for Community Engagement Publications, a project of the Partnership for Nonprofit Excellence, has developed an assessment resource that is easy to use, customizable, and affordable. The first in a series of new resource tools, "Answers on File: Governance Assessment" explains how boards and their executives can tailor an assessment process to meet your organization's unique needs.
Board assessment is both an ongoing and changing process. Whether your agency is large or small, developing or mature, or your board is composed of a few or many community leaders, Answers on File: Governance Assessment can help improve the work that goes on both in and between meetings.
Developed by the Center for Community Engagement staff, as part of its Board Leadership Workshop program, Answers on File: Governance Assessment includes:
- Background agenda materials for board discussion of governance assessment strategy and process.
- Example governance, individual director and meeting assessment tools that can be used as is, or customized to your specific situation and goals.
- Guidelines outlining core and advanced board and management practices.
- An electronic version that allows for easy distribution of the materials as well as the tailoring of the assessment tools to individual organization needs.
